CLD-M90. Like all other combo machines, it plays not only the 8-inch and 12-inch laser videodiscs, but also the 3-inch and 5-inch compact discs (and CD-Vs). The twist offered by the CLD-M90 is that it is also a "carousel-type" CD changer. It can hold up to five compact discs all at once _ in depressions on a flat, tray-like drawer.
Even when the motor-driven drawer is loaded with a full complement of CDs, it can still accept and play an 8-inch or 12-inch disc. Like other compact-disc players, this machine is completely programable _ you can choose cuts from various discs, and hear them in any order you wish. There's also a "random play" feature that lets the machine choose the musical selection order. If you like, your favorite five CDs can live in the machine, ready for instant access.
The sound quality is excellent, as good as many "dedicated" CD players, due to Pioneer's "One-bit" digital-to-analog conversion technology. And, this versatile, new carousel/combo player is a manageable size. It will stack easily with other A/V components _ it measures 17-1/8 inches wide by 16-9/16 inches deep by 5-9/16 inches tall.
To my way of thinking, the only feature this unit is missing is the ability to play both sides of 8-inch and 12-inch discs automatically. I'm afraid even the engineers at Pioneer couldn't squeeze the mechanisms necessary to accomplish this, as well as everything else, into one compact chassis.
